Welcome to Year 1

Owls and Doves have been working extremely hard since coming back after Christmas.

In science the children have been learning about different materials. They could say what materials certain objects are made from and enjoyed selecting materials to make their own boat linked to our English work on Grandad’s Island. Our most recent topic has been Florence Nightingale. It was lovely to see how interested the children were about something that happened so long ago. Within this topic the children have used adjectives to describe Florence, ordered key events onto a timeline and sorted out events that happened before or after Florence Nightingale.

In English we have been exploring different books such as Grandad’s Island, Meerkat Mail and Penguin Small. The children have worked hard to retell these stories, write their own stories and write letters pretending to be characters from the stories. We have been focusing on remembering to include capital letters, full stops and finger spaces within our sentences. The children are beginning to use some interesting vocabulary within their writing and have started to use question marks and exclamation marks correctly. The children have also continued working hard on various writing challenges within our areas of provision.

Our maths work has focused on learning about 2D and 3D shapes and thinking about their properties. We have also been thinking about addition and subtraction number problems. The children have been working hard to find missing numbers within a number sentence.

The children had the fantastic opportunity to take part in a workshop provided by the RSPB. The children were told a story and they went outside to investigate the different habitats and homes of the creatures that live in our school grounds. The children were so brilliantly behaved and appreciated being taught by someone who knew lots about the habitats and environment. We have also been lucky enough to go on a trip to Cannon Hall Farm. Here the children learnt all about the different animals, had a ride on a tractor and watched a sheep race!

Thank you for your support with the children’s learning so far by helping them with their weekly spellings, maths homework and reading.
