Topic
In Year 5, our topic lessons will explore the question: How can we make where we live look interesting? This exciting journey will be led through Art, as we study the work of local artist Barbara Hepworth. We will even visit the Hepworth Gallery to see her sculptures up close. Inspired by our observations, the children will design and create their own unique sculptures using a variety of materials, celebrating creativity and our local area.
Writing
Our writing lessons will focus on Michael Morpurgo’s Kensuke’s Kingdom, an exciting adventure story about a boy named Michael who is shipwrecked on a remote island where he discovers friendship, survival, and secrets of the past. Using this text, we will rewrite our own versions of the story and create diary entries from Michael’s point of view.
Maths
This half term we will be embedding our understanding of place value up to 1,000,000. Place value is a vital part of the maths curriculum and forms the basis for all other areas of understanding. We will also be developing our knowledge of the four operations with a focus on multiplication and division. Knowledge of times tables is so important for this and we would encourage you to practice these with the children as often as possible.
Homework
Homework is a vital component of supporting your child’s education: it offers them valuable opportunities for developing independence, time management, resilience and begins to set them up for the next step of their education. Homework will be issued once a week on a Friday and will be due back the following Friday. It will include:
- Reading – reading a minimum of 3 times per week with your child and signing the reading record.
- Times tables – this will be Times Table Rockstars and the children have access to this via their usernames and passwords. For consistent improvement, a "little and often" approach is recommended, with 3-5 minutes of practice a day, 3-4 times a week being a good target for most children.
- KIRFS – Each half term, children will focus on a Key Instant Recall Fact (KIRF) to practise and learn at home for the half term. Each child will be sent ideas or activities each week to help practice their KIRF.
- Spelling – this will be an activity based around the spelling rule they have learned this week as well as practising the statutory spellings for year 5 and 6. Children have access to Spelling Shed and can also play games which will be set weekly for them.
PE
Monday: Swimming
Girls will need to come with a full swimming costume and towel; boys will need to come with a pair of trunks and a towel. It does make things easier if the children come to school with their swimming costume under their uniform, but this is not essential.
Friday: Indoor
We are asking Year 5 children to come to school in their PE kits for the full day. Please ensure your child has the appropriate PE kit, which is a white t-shirt with no buttons, black shorts or plain black tracksuit bottoms (outdoor only) and black pump/trainers. If they do not have this kit, children will be provided with kit from school.
We would also ask that all children have a water bottle that they bring to school every day.
Should you wish to ask any further questions, please contact the school office who will direct your query to myself, and I will contact you.
