Welcome to Hawks Class!

Welcome to Year 6 and to Hawks class! I am so excited to welcome the children into Year 6 and I am really looking forward to all the exciting things we have planned for their final year of primary school. A gentle reminder that school doors open at 8.40 and the register is taken at 9,00am.

I am your class teacher, Mrs Wallis. On Wednesday afternoons or any other times I need cover, you will have Miss Hannam

Topic

This half term we are investigating the question: Who has made us love where we live? We are focusing on climate change and the way it is impacted our planet and our local environment. As this is a growing topic in the world, the children will be looking at ways to protect our local area and think about ways to improve our sustainability within Blackgates. We are also looking at the artist Jason Mercier, who creates portrait sculptures by repurposing materials. This art focus will allow children to develop their understanding of shape and form in different medias.

English

We are continuing with our writing scheme The Write Stuff. Writing is such an important skill and we want the children to really love it so please ask your child about what they have written that day and discuss the different styles of writing they have done. This half term they will be witing a speech linked to climate change and a setting description from intriguing tale: The Mysteries of Harris Burdick.

Maths

This half term we will be embedding our understanding of place value up to 10,000,000. Place value is a vital part of the maths curriculum and forms the basis for all other areas of understanding. We will also be developing our knowledge of the four operations with a focus on multiplication and division. Knowledge of times tables is so important for this and we would encourage you to practice these with the children as often as possible.

Homework

Homework will be set on a weekly basis each Friday and will be due in by Thursday. School have kindly purchased a spelling an arithmetic CGP booklet for the children’s homework. However, these books were expensive, and we kindly ask for your support in ensuring that they are well looked after. Each child will be issued with their own set, and it is important that they bring them into school each Thursday and keep them in good condition. If a book is lost or damaged beyond use, we may need to request a contribution towards its replacement. We appreciate your cooperation in encouraging your child to take care of their revision materials. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

-          Spelling – this will be 1 page from the ‘KS2 CGP spelling book’.

-          Reading – reading a minimum of 3 times per week with your child and signing the reading record.

-          Times tables – this will be Times Table Rockstars and the children have access to this via their usernames and passwords – these have been stuck in the back of your child’s reading record.

-          Maths – this will be 1 page from the ‘KS2 CGP arithmetic booklet’.

-          Topic – this half term we have asked children to collect plastics and items which would normally be thrown away to create our art work.

Just a quick reminder that children are expected to complete and hand in their homework by Thursday each week. If homework is not completed by this time, they will have the opportunity to stay in during break on Friday to finish it.

PE

Hawks will have PE on a Monday (indoor) and Thursday (outdoor). We are asking Year 6 children to come to school in their PE kits for the full day. Please ensure your child has the appropriate PE kit, which is a white t-shirt with no buttons, black shorts or plain black tracksuit bottoms (outdoor only) and black pump/trainers. If they do not have this kit, children will be provided with kit from school.

We would also ask that all children have a water bottle that they bring to school every day, with only water, no juice.

Should you wish to ask any further questions, please contact the school office who will direct your query to myself, and I will contact you.

Mrs Wallis,
