Putting children at the heart of ALL we do

Our curriculum is designed to ensure that our pupils:

We offer an aspirational curriculum designed to take all children beyond their limited life experiences to knowing and understanding about the world in the 21st Century. We aim to equip children with the knowledge and skills they need for their future by providing them with the experiences all children should have in their childhood, such as visiting the seaside, going to a zoo or to the theatre. With this in mind, we have designed our curriculum to start with our local area and its places of interest, then to look beyond that to the wider world.  We want our children to have the desire and aspiration to see what life beyond Tingley is like!

Our curriculum has been written for the children at Blackgates Primary Academy.  We therefore aim to ensure children acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve at least the ‘expected standard’ in English and Maths, as well as ensuring that Science, PSHE, Art and PE are of high priority in our school.  These subjects allow children to gain knowledge about the world as well as foster their creativity, team work skills and develop them as good, responsible citizens.  We know outdoor learning is important and that our children learn best when they are active and creative, so this is a key focus in our curriculum too.

In order to ensure that there is a progression in knowledge and skills, we have based our curriculum around six broad topic areas.  These will be revisited in every year group and new learning will build on old learning by taking a different focus.  We will remain true to the requirements of the National Curriculum where we feel it is right for our children and our context.

Our six topics are:
